"TIME TO RE-IMAGINE DEMENTIA" - 21ST AUGUST 2022
Gerontologist Dr Cecilia Chan Woen Min gave a passionate and eye-opening session on dementia at SMC's PAC hall on the morning of 21st August 2022. Despite the partial road closures due to the city-wide Marathon, many parishioners turned up for this event organised by the SMC Family Life Ministry. This subject which is something often thought of as taboo, was tackled with a lot of useful facts,videos and interesting real-life stories gleaned from Dr Cecilia's encounters with people living with dementia and their care-givers. It was interesting to note that only 10% of the so-called odd behaviours we see in people with dementia are pathological and a lot of it is a reaction to the behaviour of the people around them (e.g. family members, care-givers, acquaintances and strangers). In view of this, much thought needs to be given to the present treatment of dementia patients, as medication alone is obviously not holistic. Proper care of people living with dementia requires building relationships with them based on trust,love and understanding.
The session ended with a testimony from Mr. Peter Bucher, a Swiss by birth and Perakian by choice (his own words), who highlighted the positive and therapeutic effects of the arts on his wife Irene, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2020. He shared how the use of creative activities like painting and pottery-making helped his wife live a full life despite her dementia diagnosis.

HEALING IN EVANGELIZATION RETREAT - 12TH & 14TH AUGUST 2022
Thank you Jesus, all the participants, Fr Gino Henriques C.Ss.R, PDNEC, Mr Ariokadass Anthonysamy and the Penang Diocesean Healing and Deliverance teams, Holy Spirit Prayer Group from CHS Penang, the Seeds, all SMC volunteers, caterers and the SMC Faith Formation team for making the recently concluded Healing in Evangelization retreat a spirit-filled enriching event. May all of us who participated in this retreat be inspired to always make Jesus the centre of their lives and to forgive,repent and renounce of all that keeps us apart from God. God bless us all!

Many thanks to all the participants too for adhering to the spirit of Laudato Si as espoused by Pope Francis and bringing their own water tumblers, with some even bringing their own cutlery so that NO disposable cutlery, plastic cups and water bottles were used throughout the three days of the retreat. Paper used during the sessions were also from recycled paper.

SUMMARY OF SMC LENTEN WORKS - 1ST MAY 2022
I. Blood donation campaign for benefit of HRPB & Hospital Fatimah-A total of 64 packs of blood was collected.
II. Total collected from our church for the Penang Diocesan Lenten campaign was RM28,765/=.
III. 492 children were assisted through SMC's Lenten School Uniform project.
IV. SMC's Ministry to the Poor distributed food through its Lenten Basket project.
A big "Thank You" to all who worked contributed and donated to these lenten projects.
